This crisp little sugar cookie is a family recipe from the island of St. Michael in the Azores.

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 cup granulated white sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla
  • 2 large eggs


  1. Coating: 1/3 cup granulated white sugar
  2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F, place rack in center of oven.
  3. In a bowl combine the flour, salt and baking powder and mix well.
  4. In another bowl add the cornstarch, sugars, butter, vanilla and beat in the eggs.
  5. Add the flour mixture a little at a time into the butter and eggs mixture. Mix together well.
  6. Refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes.
  7. For each cookie take 1 tablespoon of the cookie dough and roll into a ball.
  8. Take each ball and roll into the coating (1/3 cup sugar) then press down to the shape of a cookie.
  9. Place cookies 2 inches apart on a ungreased cookie sheet or use parchment paper.
  10. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until cookies are golden brown at the edges.
  11. Allow cookies to cool for 10 minutes
